Due to increasing restrictions on diesel emissions, Ford PowerstrokeTM engines have incorporated a closed crankcase vapor return system. This system uses a non-serviceable low efficiency system to reduce the oil carryover to the turbo inlet. Even though this system is non-serviceable, Ford service manuals recommend periodic cleaning of the tube from the breather to the inlet. This oil build up can migrate from the tube to the turbo and aftercooler. If not serviced properly, this oil buildup might lead to caking on the turbo blades resulting in loss of boost pressure or oil buildup on the aftercooler resulting in lower than specified heat transfer. If the system experiences a long period between service intervals, ultimate problems include possible oil leaking from the turbo. This may be inappropriately diagnosed as a damaged turbo. However, improved filtration of this system will extend the service interval of the turbo and aftercooler as well as reduce the chance of downline component fouling. How it Works The Racor CCV3550-FRD-02 replaces the current breather system. The filtration system incorporates a high efficiency coalescing media to capture additional particulate contamination and collect additional blowby vapor returning it to the crankcase through the intake turbo. The integral crankcase pressure regulator installed prior to the element regulates a slight vacuum in the crankcase during operation reducing the pressure in the crankcase and the chance of engine seal leakage.

When the element has reached its useful life, the indicator will alert the user that the element needs to be changed. The element is designed to operate efficiently and to be serviced every other oil change unless the indicator shows a requirement for service.
